Home renovation sounds exciting—until you are involved into dust and chaos with noise going everywhere. But don’t you panic! You could survive your renovation without losing your mind. Here are simple tips and practical advice on how to make it through.

1. Plan Ahead
Plan all that should be done before renovation work begins. That includes knowing where one will store all their things, how meals are going to be managed, and where one might go to escape the cacophony. A clear timeline and what to expect will help relieve some of that anxiety about daily disruptions.

2. Create a living space
For example, if your entire house is being worked on, create one area that isn’t being remodeled as a mini-living space. Outfit this small area with a bed, a table, and chairs. Having this small space for relaxing in can help you feel more grounded even if the rest of your house looks like a construction zone.

3. Be Organized
Pack in your stuff in boxes or storage containers and identify them. You cannot get more lost than when something’s renovated. Ensure that daily stuffs like toiletries, packets of snacks, and work-from-home equipment are accessible just so you don’t find yourself digging through piles of stuff for what seems like a lifetime.

4. Reasonable Expectations
Things may not go as planned, and delays and surprises happen. Just relax and be flexible with your expectations and attitude because, hey, it’s just temporary renovations to reach for your dream home!

5. Take Breaks Away from Home
Sometimes, one really needs to take a step back from the mess. Plan days out or even stay with friends or family for a while if the noise and dust get overwhelming. A little break can make a huge difference in your mental well-being.

6. Communicate With Your Contractor
Keep a direct line of communication open with your contractor. Ensure they communicate progress and changes that may come along. This will help you keep on top of the renovation and not be taken by surprise.

7. Adopt the Process
Renovations are all about change. It is tough now, but it’s worth all of this in the end. Take pictures before and after to remind you of all the changes!

By planning ahead, keeping yourself organized, and caring for your physical and mental health, you can survive with minimal stress through renovation of your home. Sooner or later, you will enjoy your newly refurbished home!
