Lilo & Stitch’ Live-Action: All You Need to Know About Disney’s Beloved Remake

It has been 22 years since the Disney movie Lilo & Stitch warmed our hearts. Its story about a little girl and her alien friend seems to be one that people love even today. Now, Disney is bringing back this magic with a live-action/CG hybrid remake.

A Long Road to Production

Rumors of the remake originally surfaced in October 2018 when The Hollywood Reporter announced that Disney was looking to reimagine the film set in Hawaii. Much-delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, after facing several ups and downs, the project was finally wrapped up earlier this year.

Behind the Scenes: Writers and Directors

It all began with Mike Van Waes, who wrote the first draft of the screenplay. Before any cameras started rolling, though, Chris Kekaniokalani Bright stepped in to do a rewrite on the script. First attached to direct was Jon M. Chu, but scheduling conflicts opened up the opportunity for Dean Fleischer Camp to take over the director’s chair.

Delays and Setbacks

The remake picked up steam in July 2022, though not without its bumps. First, a fire on set broke out, prompting an arson investigation, with production temporarily halted. The film resumed in April 2023 before another stoppage due to the writers’ strike in May, then again just a few months later when the actors went on strike.

Casting Controversies

Some casting decisions turned out to be particularly controversial, among them that of Sydney Elizabeth Adugong as Nani, Lilo’s sister. People were quick to notice an alleged colorism since Adugong is several shades lighter compared to the version in the cartoon. In another turn of events, Kahiau Machado, who had been cast as David Kawena, was replaced by Kaipot Dudoit after Machado’s history of racial slurs came to light on the internet.

What to Expect

The principal photography finally came to a close earlier this year, with the 2024 release date still set to be on Disney+. The movie will take the fans back into the magical world of Lilo & Stitch but, for the very first time, as a modern adaption.
